Situated just a short 15 minute drive from the city centre, Rondevlei offers a quiet and secluded alternative to the hustle and bustle of urban life. Alluring in it's beauty, Rondevlei is a haven, an oasis, where one can seek comforting solitude or a natural outlet to uplift the spirit.

Take a Stroll back in time
Established in 1952, and surrounded my majestic coastal dunes, the reserve boasts a large vlei - which is among the most important wetlands for birds in the Western Cape. On most days, you will find a kind and gentle breeze filtering through the Strandveld and endangered Sand Plain Fynbos, which boasts some plants found nowhere else in the world.
Pause for a moment inside one of six bird hides along the various walks and you will witness the likes of White Pelican, Greater Flamingo, African Spoonbill, Caspian Tern. Up to 230 different species of birds have been sighted at Rondevlei.

It's just a walk in the park
Whatever your pleasure, Rondevlei is sure to delight you. Spend the day fishing for Carp! Take in a scenic boat ride! Visit the live snakes and porcupine! Marvel at the aquarium! Stand atop our look-out towers complete with telescopes! Or simply relax with family & friends along the shoreline as you tuck into your favourite picnic basket. But wherever your feet may take you, be sure to keep your eyes peeled for the myriad of Grysbok, Cape Clawless Otter, Cape Grey Mongoose and of course, our ever-present family of rather shy hippopotami! Low-profile and retiring by nature, our hippopotami are known to sneak a peek at visitors when they least expect it - so please remember to bring your camera!

Fly into the museum
Once you've enjoyed your leisurely day in the reserve, why not duck into the Leonard Gill museum and our environmental education centre. You'll find plenty of mother nature's very own information on all of our inhabitants - flora and fauna alike.
Environmental education
You may, of course, want to stay overnight at our island bush camp or arrange a conference at our 45-seat center - arrangements can be made through Imvubu Nature Tours.
